What gum contouring is

Gum contouring in Istanbul is the reshaping of the gum line so that the teeth appear in their correct proportion. Excess gum tissue can make healthy teeth look short and square; an uneven gum line makes even well-matched teeth look crooked. Contouring removes or repositions gum tissue, and sometimes a small amount of the underlying bone, to reveal the true tooth and set a symmetrical frame. It is often the first step in a smile makeover because ceramics are designed to the new gum line, not the old one.

Two procedures cover most cases. A gingivectomy removes excess soft tissue only, usually with a laser, when the tooth beneath is fully formed and the bone is at the right level. Crown lengthening reshapes both gum and bone when the bone sits too close to the edge of the gum, which is needed to keep the new gum line stable rather than allowing it to grow back.

Who gum contouring suits

• A gummy smile where several millimetres of gum show above the teeth when smiling
• Teeth that look short because gum covers part of the crown, often after orthodontics or in late eruption
• An asymmetric gum line, where one tooth appears longer than its twin
• A tooth that needs a crown but has too little structure above the gum to hold one

When another approach is needed

A gummy smile caused by a short or hyperactive upper lip, or by vertical excess of the upper jaw, is not solved by gum surgery alone; those cases are identified at examination and discussed honestly. Inflamed or bleeding gums must be treated first with gum treatment, because tissue that is not healthy cannot be reshaped predictably. The final plan is decided after examination.

Step by step: how the gum line is planned and reshaped

• Examination: gum health, tooth length beneath the gum and the bone level are assessed with probing and X-rays.
• Design: the ideal gum line is drawn digitally on your photographs and scan, following the lip and the proportions of each tooth.
• Mock-up: in smile makeover cases, the planned tooth shapes are trialled so you can see how the new gum line and new teeth work together.
• Procedure: under local anaesthetic, tissue is reshaped with a laser or fine instruments to the planned line; in crown lengthening, bone is also recontoured and the gum is sutured.
• Healing: soft tissue settles in one to two weeks after laser contouring; after crown lengthening the margin is left to mature for six to eight weeks.
• Restorative stage: veneers or crowns are prepared to the final, stable gum line.

Laser gingivectomy versus crown lengthening

The choice is not about preference but about what lies beneath. If the bone is already at the right level and only soft tissue is excessive, a laser gingivectomy is quick, nearly bloodless and heals in days. If the bone sits close to the gum edge, removing gum alone will produce a result that creeps back within months; crown lengthening moves the bone as well and holds the new line permanently.

• Laser gingivectomy: soft tissue only, single short visit, minimal discomfort, ceramics can follow within two weeks.
• Crown lengthening: gum and bone, sutures, a longer healing window, and a stable result where soft-tissue removal alone would relapse.
• Combined with orthodontics: in some cases, moving the teeth with orthodontics changes the gum line without surgery.

Healing, stability and care

A properly indicated contour is permanent. Mild soreness and swelling for a few days are normal after laser work; after crown lengthening, sutures are removed at about a week and the gum matures over the following weeks. Gentle brushing with a soft brush, an antiseptic rinse as directed and avoiding hard or spicy food for the first days is the whole regime. Alternatives to gum contouring

Where the cause is lip movement rather than gum excess, lip repositioning or muscle-relaxing injections are options discussed outside the dental plan. Where teeth are short because of wear rather than gum cover, lengthening the teeth with veneers or E-max crowns may be enough on its own. Sometimes a modest recontour of two or three teeth is all that is needed to bring symmetry, and that is what we recommend when it is the case.

Fitting gum contouring into a visit to Istanbul

Laser contouring is done in a single appointment and can be combined with veneer preparation in the same five-to-seven-day visit, since the tissue settles within the laboratory interval. Risks and what to watch for

Temporary sensitivity where root surface is newly exposed, mild bleeding and swelling are expected and short-lived. Relapse of the gum line happens when soft tissue is removed without addressing bone, which is why the bone level is checked first. Over-removal can leave a tooth looking long or expose root; the digital design and conservative approach are the safeguards. Persistent bleeding, increasing pain after the third day or a loose suture should be reported so it can be seen promptly.
